Shopify charges a transaction fee when you use a third-party payment gateway (like PayPal, Stripe, or Square) instead of Shopify Payments. The fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, and 0.5% on Advanced — applied to the full transaction value. Using Shopify Payments (their built-in gateway) completely eliminates this fee.
Shopify Payments is available in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and most EU countries. If your country isn't supported, you'll need a third-party gateway and will pay the transaction fee on every sale.
When you refund a transaction, Shopify refunds you the transaction fee but not the credit card processing fee. So for a $100 sale where you paid $3.20 in Stripe-equivalent fees, you'd receive a $1 refund of the transaction fee but lose the $2.20 credit card processing fee.
When customers pay in a currency different from your payout currency, Shopify adds a 1.5% currency conversion fee. This is in addition to the standard processing fee. You can enable multi-currency pricing to display prices in local currencies without this conversion being forced.
