Meta Tags: What Every Web Page Needs
Meta tags are HTML snippets in your page's <head> that tell search engines and social platforms what your page is about. They don't appear on the page itself, but they control how your page looks in Google search results and when shared on social media.
Essential Meta Tags
<title>: Appears as the blue link text in Google results. Max 60 characters. Most important on-page SEO factor.
meta description: The grey snippet text in Google results. Max 160 characters. Doesn't directly affect ranking but impacts click-through rate.
canonical URL: Tells Google which version of a URL is the "official" one, preventing duplicate content issues.
robots: Controls whether Google crawls and indexes the page (index/noindex) and follows its links (follow/nofollow).
Open Graph Tags for Social Sharing
Open Graph (og:) tags control how your page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and most social platforms. The og:image should be 1200×630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio) for best results. Without OG tags, social platforms pick unpredictable title, description, and image from your page.
Twitter Card Tags
Twitter Card tags (twitter:) control the preview on Twitter/X. summary_large_image shows a large image; summary shows a small thumbnail. Twitter falls back to OG tags if Twitter-specific tags are missing.
Frequently Asked Questions
No — Google stopped using meta keywords as a ranking factor around 2009. Meta keywords are ignored by Google, Bing, and most major search engines. The only meta tags that matter for SEO today are: title, description, robots, canonical, and viewport. Open Graph tags matter for social sharing (CTR from social). Meta keywords are not included in this generator for that reason.
Keep meta titles under 60 characters (approximately 580 pixels wide, the space Google shows in SERPs). Google truncates titles that exceed the pixel limit with '…'. Include your primary keyword near the beginning, and your brand name at the end (Title | Brand Name). Titles 50–60 characters long perform best in click-through studies.
The Open Graph image (og:image) appears when your URL is shared on social media — it's the big image preview on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Slack link previews. Use 1200×630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio) for full support across platforms. File size under 8MB. For Twitter summary_large_image card: minimum 300×157 pixels, ideally 1200×628. Always use an absolute URL, not a relative path.
noindex tells search engines not to include this page in search results. Use it for: thank-you pages, login/account pages, internal search results, staging/preview pages, and thin content pages with no SEO value. Never accidentally noindex your homepage or important pages. Combine with nofollow if you also don't want Google to follow the links on the page.
