File Size Units: KB vs KiB, MB vs MiB
There are two competing standards for file size units — decimal (SI) and binary (IEC) — and the difference can cause significant confusion when comparing storage capacity to file size reports.
Why Your Hard Drive Appears Smaller Than Advertised
Hard drive manufacturers advertise capacity in decimal (1 TB = 10¹² bytes = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). Windows reports storage in binary GiB but labels them GB. A "1 TB" drive shows as ~931 GB in Windows because: 10¹²/2³⁰ = 931.3 GiB. This is not the manufacturer lying — it's a unit mismatch.
Both usages exist, which is the source of much confusion. Officially: 1 KB (kilobyte) = 1,000 bytes (SI/decimal standard, used by storage manufacturers and macOS). 1 KiB (kibibyte) = 1,024 bytes (IEC binary standard, used by RAM, filesystems, and Windows). In practice, many people use KB to mean 1024 bytes informally. Context matters — hard drive spec sheets mean 1,000; a programmer talking about buffer sizes likely means 1,024.
In decimal: 1 GB = 1,000 MB. In binary: 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. For rough estimates, treat it as 1 GB ≈ 1,000 MB. The difference matters at scale: a 4K video labeled as 10 GB by your Mac is 10,000 MB decimal = 9,537 MiB binary.
A bit is the smallest unit of data — a single 0 or 1. A byte is 8 bits. Storage is measured in bytes (MB, GB). Network speed is measured in bits per second (Mbps, Gbps). To convert download speed to file size: divide by 8. A 100 Mbps connection downloads 100/8 = 12.5 MB per second.
Modern smartphones (iPhone 15, Pixel 8) produce JPEG photos of 3–8 MB per image at high quality settings. HDR photos: 8–15 MB. HEIC format (iPhone default): 1–4 MB (roughly half the JPEG size at equivalent quality). RAW photos from a DSLR: 20–50 MB. A 1-minute 4K video (iPhone): approximately 400 MB.
